The Busted BubbleJune 22, 1925

Panel 1

Despite repeated nose-dives, Ella is still struggling to crash the portals of fortune in a great city.

Panel 2

Ella: If I don’t get some place for Blackie and me to stay, I’ll have to go back to Ma Cinders, where I’m as welcome as a Kleagle in a synagogue.

Panel 3

Ella: Can you let me have a room? I’ll pay you when I get a job.

Landlady: You’ve got as much chance as a safety razor salesman in Russia!

Panel 4

Ella: Blackie, I’ve gone over this town for a room like a hen scratching for a worm, but nobody wants us. Do you think we’ll have to fold up and blow back?

Blackie: Crabapples, Ella – this way, please!

Panel 5

Blackie: How’s this?

Ella: It’d be just like home if we had someone to yank us around and be mean to us.

Back to The SinkJune 23, 1925

Panel 1

Ella: I feel about as chipper as a grasshopper with fallen arches, but I’m going to get a job today or become a bobbed-hair bandit.

Panel 2

Ella: Just imagine tucking away seven or eight dozen buckwheat cakes, with a nice big steak for dessert!

Panel 3

Ella: I’m the girl you wanted, Mister.

Restaurant Owner: You said it, sister. That kitchen sure does lack the feminine touch.

Panel 4

Ella: Of all the jobs in the world, look what I won! Getting me to wash dishes is like making a motorman take a trolley ride on his day off!

A Pick-Up LunchJune 24, 1925

Panel 1

Ella: I’ll take these leftovers and give Blackie a treat. He’s so out of practice in eating that when he chews his jaws squeak.

Panel 2

Restaurant Owner: Whatcha got in the package?

Ella: Oh, just a little lunch to nibble on the way home.

Panel 3

Restaurant Owner: Where do you live – China?

Panel 4

Blackie: Oh boy!

Ella: They are only leftovers, Blackie, but if you’ll eat them fast they’ll taste like hash.

The Busted BubbleJune 25, 1925

Panel 1

Ella: When I got this job I was happier than a horsefly in a candy shop, but now I wish I’d gone in for something easy, – like digging ditches.

Waitress: I quit!

Panel 2

Ella: This is what I call a rise in the world. Now that the waitress has quit, instead of shuffling ‘em in the sink I’ll be dealing ‘em off the arm.

Cashier: Keep your old job!

Panel 3

Ella: First dishwasher, then waitress, now cashier!!! I’m going ahead so fast it leaves my breath behind. I’ll save my pay and buy this place – then I’ll buy more restaurants until I have a chain of them and –

Panel 4

Detective: I’m from the sheriff’s office. Your creditors are closing you up!

Panel 5

Ella: Well, the only turnover in that business was in the frying pan.

Mother’s Little LambsJune 26, 1925

Panel 1

Since Ella went away, her stepsisters are getting a taste of her daily portion of toil and if Ella could hear what they say, her ears would be hotter than a pepper plant in Death Valley –

Panel 2

Mytie: Come, come, girls! Mother doesn’t wish to hurry you, but the entire house must be clean before the sewing circle arrives.

Panel 3

Lotta: I’m going to tell Mamah to get a new galley slave! I’m through wasting myself away on a scrubbing brush!

Prissie: Diplomacy, Sis – I’ve got a scheme.

Panel 4

Lotta: Ow-oo oo!!

Mytie: What’s up?

Prissie: I’m afraid overwork has driven poor Lotta into a nervous spell – from the way I feel, too.

Panel 5

Mytie: Why, my poor lambs! Mother didn’t realize how much too hard this is for you both – I’ll get somebody right away in that ungrateful Little Ella’s place!

The Captured SlaveJune 27, 1925

Panel 1

Ella: Guess I’ll try an Employment Agency, now that I’ve eaten that restaurant out of business.

Panel 2

Agency: Have you had domestic experience?

Ella: Experience? Say, – I was born in a kitchen with a broom in my hand and I’ve broken more dishes than Nurmi has records!

Panel 3

Agency: Come in here. A kind motherly lady wants a girl – good wages, beautiful room – two nights off a week, and treatment like one of the family.

Ella: Sounds swell – all but the family treatment.

Panel 4

Agency: Here’s a girl –

Ella: Ogeegosh! Ma Cinders!

Mytie: So!!

Panel 5

Mytie: I tried kindness and that didn’t work – so from now on I’ll be as strict as the army colonel who made his wife salute him!
